Your Guide to Yoga Classes in Amsterdam
by HarryPrince, 17 November 2020
There are a lot of different kinds of yoga, and there are a lot of different studios in Amsterdam to match. We like to be helpful, so we’ve put together a guide to the best yoga classes in Amsterdam. If you’re planning a corporate event in the city, one of these studios could be a great place for a group workshop.
Hot Yoga
Hot yoga is exactly what it sounds like – yoga under hot and humid conditions. The goal is to produce more sweat and remove impurities. The heat helps the body in its movement.
Movements Yoga

Movements Yoga is a boutique studio, with lots of flowers in Overtoom. They run more than 90 weekly classes for every skill level. So this is the perfect yoga for beginners or more advanced practitioners.
Movements Yoga is the first Amsterdam Hot Yoga and Pilates studio. A close-knit team of yoga teachers, they know you by your name and where you immediately feel at home.
Equal Yoga

With two yoga locations in Amsterdam, Equal Yoga is home to modern, elegant and dark studio rooms. And if you can’t make it but still like the look of the studio, they offer free yoga for beginners from home.
The classes offer you the chance to sweat, burn, tone or relax; from Equal Yin, Core Power, and four levels of Equal Barre, it’s up to you. All classes enhance flexibility and strength by combining movement, breath and static postures. It’s an excellent pick for both beginners and advanced yogis.
Iyengar Yoga
With Iyengar yoga, it’s all in the details. Developed by B.K.S Iyengar, this method is about precision and alignment in the performance of the various postures. You’ll often see people using props in Iyengar yoga to help achieve the desired precision.
LiveYoga

LiveYoga is about making old masterful teaching relevant and alive in everyday life. Focus is on practising in small groups, personal adjustments, self-care, and longer classes.
Their beautiful studio is in Amsterdam and is filled with natural light and wood features. They do online classes as well as in person.
Iyengar Yoga Centrum

Iyengar Yoga Centrum is dedicated to the teaching of B.K.S Iyengar.
Besides the general classes, Iyengar Yoga Centrum Amsterdam offers prenatal classes, classes for 50+, private lessons and workshops.
Pre-registration is not necessary. Just come down 15 minutes before class to sign in and pay.
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa is also known as flow yoga. With this yoga style, the postures connect as you move from one move the next, seamlessly using breath.
Sukha Yoga

Sukha is great because the studios look like you could be in someone’s home.
The people at Sukha are keen on building a sense of community, camaraderie and cosiness, exemplified by their restorative sessions.
They run classes every day; vinyasa and yin classes take place daily, and there are also some yoga nidra classes during the week.
Yoga Garden

Yoga Garden is special. They are more interested in how you feel than how you look. At Yoga Garden, they believe that your yoga practise shouldn’t try to make you into something you are not. Instead, yoga should stimulate you to become the best version of yourself.
If that sounds interesting, book up. They’re a non-profit yoga space designed to let both teachers and students grow.
It’s a small space in the West of the city that could be lovely for you to do yoga at your own pace and in your own style.
Yoga Retreats
There are lots of benefits of a yoga retreat. Becoming better, becoming healthier, and just a good old retreat from the city. A different perspective will give you the energy to attack the week.
The Yoga House in Gelderland

Andrew Boeg leads this three-day yoga retreat. The goal is relaxation. You’ll arrive at a lively coach house and garden, with charming walking trails, and a cosy yoga hall. You will take this newfound relaxation into your everyday life for sure.
Skill levels from beginner to advanced are catered for. Highlights include four yoga classes, meditation sessions, a sound experience, pure relaxation sessions, quality support during your stay, two nights accommodation, and organic vegetarian meals.
Ilma Yoga House

Situated in Gaasperplas, the Ilma house is only 20 mins from Amsterdam in the Metro, but it feels like a lifetime away. The Ilma Yoga House is about being outside, and indulging a sense of adventure.
The sleeping options are great, and it’s up to you how you do it: you can sleep on a boat, in a hippie camper van, a Mongolian yurt, or in the guest house.
The yoga style promoted here is hatha, and is welcoming to all skill levels. But there’s more than yoga on offer. The lake is a lovely natural area to walk around, to do some jogging, play tennis or do some swimming and sailing.
Wrapping up
As you can see, there’s so many unique venues to choose from. But that doesn’t mean you have to agonise over which one to choose. You can come and go as you like, so why not try them all?
If you’d like to know more about yoga, Amsterdam, or different kinds of exciting and alternative workshop ideas, we’d love to hear from you.
