About the space

This event venue is a magnificent underground water reservoir located in Istanbul, Turkey. This historical marvel, built during the Byzantine period in the 6th century, is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. It derives its name from the 336 decorative columns inside, which were repurposed from various ancient structures, creating a mesmerizing forest of columns. 212 of its 224 original columns have survived to the present day.

The cistern was designed to store and supply water for the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings in the vicinity. It covers an area of approximately 9,800 square meters and has a capacity of 100,000 tons of water. The cistern's most famous feature is the Medusa heads, two intricately carved ancient Roman column bases featuring the face of the mythical Gorgon Medusa, placed upside down as structural supports.

The dimly lit, atmospheric environment, with its still water and reflections, creates an eerie and captivating ambiance. Visitors can explore the walkways and observe the fish swimming in the shallow water. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the Byzantine Empire, offering a unique journey back in time beneath the bustling streets of modern Istanbul.
